The Pokémon videogames make up the core of the Pokémon franchise and comprise all videogames released since its inception in 1996. Pokémon was originally born with the distribution of the Gameboy games Pokémon Green and Pokémon Red in Japan, the first video games in the franchise. From the video games came the other major branches of Pokémon: anime, manga, and trading card games. Still today, it is the videogames that set the dominant tone, with the latter deriving their content from the videogames.

The Pokémon videogames form the core of the Pokémon franchise and comprise all videogames released since its inception in 1996. Pokémon was originally born with the distribution of Pokémon Green and Pokémon Red in Japan, the first video game in the franchise. From the video games came the other major branches of Pokémon: anime, manga, and Trading Card Games. Still today, it is the videogames that set the dominant tone, with the former deriving their content from the videogames.

The most important classification of Pokémon videogames is the one that distinguishes between main videogames and spin-offs, also known as secondary videogames. The former category includes videogames in which the player is a Pokémon trainer, embarking on a Pokémon adventure that involves collecting a series of medals with the ultimate goal of taking part in the Pokémon League and catching all Pokémon. Obstacles, such as small trees or water in our way, are overcome by MO (Hidden Machines), techniques that can be taught to your Pokémon. There are also TMs (Technical Machines), which are used to teach your Pokémon different attacks, but be careful with them as each TM can only be used once.

Certain very powerful TMs are obtained by playing games in an in-game casino.

The game methodology is the same as those found online today. In real life, there are casinos offering free spins that will give you more opportunities to play and allow you to keep what you win. In addition, a large number of bonuses are available such as free spins and no deposit. The latter are given free of charge to new players. However, there are other less common bonuses such as free spin promotions and prizes. All of them are generous, safe, and perfect for a good time.

In this way, other Pokémon games that are considered “main” follow the model established in Pokémon Green and Pokémon Red. They are the most abundant and varied in content and are the ones that inaugurate each new generation of the franchise. These video games are the essence of Pokémon and are also the best sellers.

On the other hand, there are side games with a very broad and diverse set of entertainment that do not rely on the aforementioned mechanics that feature in the main branch of Pokémon games. Instead, they focus on other aspects and features that exist in the Pokémon world or are simply minor video games based on puzzle solving, racing, Pokémon battles, and so on. Thus, these secondary videogames offer a game experience close to the main ones in terms of complexity, such as the Pokémon Ranger saga, where the player is a ranger in charge of defending Pokémon, or the Pokémon Mystery World saga, where the characters are Pokémon themselves.

In contrast to these, there are videogames with simpler mechanics, such as the Pokémon Rumble series, which involves battling waves of Pokémon, or the Pokémon Battles series, whose main attraction is to engage in battles with better graphics than on the main videogames or other videogames dedicated simply to collecting and storing Pokémon.

A third category would include applications or apps released in recent years that take advantage of the advances in connectivity and functionality of Nintendo’s consoles.

Pokémon Go: Augmented reality

Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game, extending its domain outside video game consoles to take up residence on both smartphones and interact with the ‘real world’.

Players seek to excel as Pokémon trainers, fictional creatures with different abilities that are captured into special balls.

According to the original concept, trainers seek to capture Pokémon until their collection is complete. Another goal would be to train them to win battles against other rival Pokémon.

To capture a Pokémon, the player must literally take to the real-life streets of your city. Using the phone’s GPS, the app will alert you with a vibration and a flashing light when you are near a Pokémon.

When the player turns on their phone’s camera, they are met with an image of the Pokémon in question, superimposed over the real scene behind the lens. By touching the creature on the screen, you are given the opportunity to catch it to add it to your collection.

This is why the game is considered to be augmented reality: it allows you to see reality mixed in with an element of fiction you can interact with through a technological device.
